Citizens’ Climate International condemns all forms of violence. Political violence—whether against stakeholders, advocates, dissidents, or public officials—is a crime against all people’s right to remain free from terror and tyranny.
The assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who served longer as Japan’s Prime Minister than any other person, is a shock and a tragedy. Public service should never make anyone a target, and the use of violence to target current or former public officials undermines the rights and safety of all people.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Japan, as they mourn this loss and work through the aftermath of this tragedy. We call on all governments to recognize in the tragedy of this killing the clear signal that no person anywhere should be subjected to any act of political intimidation, coercion, or abuse.
